Reptiles including birds, together with their extinct relatives, are known collectively as "sauropsids". The scientific name Sauropsida (meaning "lizard faces") is used for the group of amniotes that includes all modern reptiles and birds as well as their fossil ancestors, including the dinosaurs, the immediate ancestors of birds. Sauropsida is distinguished from Synapsida, which includes mammals and their fossil relatives.
