Guidelines and Templates

From Toy Animal Wiki
Jump to navigation Jump to search

This page is to set some general guidelines for entries and to provide a few helpful templates that can be copied into different page types. You can always look at the edit tab of a similar page and copy the contents over, then change the data.

General Structure

The Wiki consists of a few different types of pages. There are Category pages that automatically create and alphabetize themselves. The main ones will be Category:Companies, Category:Countries as well as categories for individual countries, breeds, and those for some other specific topics. Content pages will mostly be either about a company, about a specific model/toy/figure, about the animal that figures are based upon, or general collecting information.

Company Pages

Each manufacturer (like Papo or Elastolin) will have its own main page. All information known about the company in general should be on that page. It should also contain either a list of animal figures that are/were created by the company, or links to pages that would contain a list of all animal figures. Big companies may need to be split into multiple smaller pages to hold the figure lists so the main page doesn't get too long. These pages may represent certain lines, periods or some other grouping natural for that particular company.

Initially the lists of figures will be just the list. All of those listed though should be created as a possible future figure page. Here is an example of how to do that.

*Small Replicas
**Science and Nature 75370 Bilby
**Science and Nature 75341 Black Swan
**Science and Nature 75384 Blue Wren

Use a single star to create a title for a list section if it needs to be indented below a heading and use double stars ahead of each name. This will create bulleted lists. Note that the name of the animal may be repeated with a pipe in between. The first part is the actual individual figure page name, and should always include the appropriate company indication and a part number or similar if known. The second part is how you would like it to appear to the reader in the list. It isn't required to do this, but it can look smoother to the reader. Linking to the figure pages with the name change looks like this:

*Small Replicas
**Bilby
**Black Swan
**Blue Wren

If there are links associated with the company, either the companies own web page or that of collectors or fans specializing in that company, there should be a links section towards the bottom of the page. Use two = ahead of and after the section name to create a section heading, then list the links below that. Section headings may also be used to separate figure lists if that seems most appropriate.

At the bottom of each company page there should be at least two categories listed. One for the Companies index page and one for the Nation index page. These are created by using the double brackets in front then the word Category: (include the colon) followed by the word Companies and closing double brackets. The same should be added for the nation the company is from. Just copy this content into the bottom of the page:

Remember to change the nation to the correct one. Add additional categories for materials the company used. Often it will be just one, but some companies used more than one. Material category names can be found at the bottom of each section on the Materials page.

Whenever possible please create a special sub-section for Horses. This will allow the sections to be directly linked from a horses category page.

Figure Pages

Every toy figure can have it's own page. The figure lists on company pages will have live links that lead to the empty space for the page, just add some content and the page will be created. Content can include details about the toy and ideally a picture.

Every Figure Page MUST have a unique name If you name the page Platypus it will conflict with the animal page for Platypus. The page naming should include the name of the company that made it, the part or set number if known, and the type of animal. For example the page for the Science and Nature small platypus would be named "Science and Nature 75483 Platypus". As the large platypus number is 75455 it may be named "Science and Nature 75455 Platypus" - as the result are distinct names, so they won't conflict.

The first section of every Figure Page should include something like the following table, just copy this code into the edit page and change the details as necessary. Any lines that you do not have an answer for can be deleted. They can always be added back later if the info becomes known. Here is the code section:

Animal
Kakapo
Maker
Science and Nature
Series
Small Replicas
Color
green
Product Number
75343
Released
put the year here
Discontinued
put the year here

Both the animal name and the maker should have the double brackets around them to link to the pages for each. Animal names should be the most common one likely to be used, check the By Animal tree to find the best location to link to. Capitalization matters, be sure to use the exact spelling as used in By Animal. Some animals like dogs may link to their breeds. If there are modifiers like Dalmatian Puppy then just Dalmatian would get linked and the Puppy part would be regular text outside the brackets or in alternative, use

Dalmatian Puppy

.

Note: We are doing an effort to use the same names for animal pages as those we can find on English Wikipedia.

Animal
Dalmatian Puppy

Color should be the most dominant color of the animal in the most common terms. That is there so someone searching for a brown cow can find the page easier and avoid all the white cow pages for example. This is most important when dealing with color variants that have different product numbers. For horses use their equine colors if possible, more informations about equine colors can be found at Wikipedia. If you know the release year put that in. If not, leave it blank. Availability should be either "in production", "discontinued" or "unknown" If you know the year it was discontinued, replace the word Availability for Discontinued and put the year.

Released
1997
Discontinued
2009

Released
1997
Availability
in production

Another option is to use a general era that the item was in release

Era
1950s-1960s

Another section that can be added is the name of a specific line or series if that is known. Insert this section just after the maker part

Maker
Science and Nature
Series
Small Replicas

If the series has it's own page add the double brackets around the series name, be sure to match the actual name of the page you are linking to.

Put together the table looks like this:

Animal Kakapo
Maker Science and Nature
Series Small Replicas
Color green
Released 2013
Availability in production

After creating a figure page please go to the linked Animal page and add a link back to the figure.

In this example you would go to the Kakapo page and add

Science and Nature 75343 Kakapo

under the Replicas heading. If there are already other figures linked there please add the new link in the correct alphabetical order. If you include a breed please do the same for that page. Make sure the figure is linked to on the Company page as well.

Animal Pages

Some people like to search by the type of animal, or to browse through a tree structure. This can be created using a box similar to that on the Figure Page. Using the double brackets creates a link to a page at that level of the tree structure.

Just copy and paste in this code, then change to the correct content

+
Example Box
phylum
Chordata
clade
Diapsida
class
Aves
order
Psittaciformes
family
Strigopidae
genus
Strigops
species
S. habroptilus

The common name of the animal goes in between 4 = in this example it's the word Kakapo Turn into links all taxonomic levels that have a corresponding page at the Wiki. Use the scientific classification given in Wikipedia for that species. In this case it would be found here: wikipedia.org/wiki/Kakapo

Here's what the box looks like

Example Box

phylum Chordata
clade Diapsida
class Aves
order Psittaciformes
family Strigopidae
genus Strigops
species S. habroptilus

Beneath the animal data box you then add a Gallery section to link to known replicas of the animal. See the Galleries section below for correct coding.

If the animal page is not for a specific species but for a genus like Kangaroo (genus Macropus) you may add sections for specific species. Include the links to the replica pages under those headings and then on the individual species page as well.

Images

Please include some indication of the company or other details in the file name of the image. It will get messy if we end up with 50 pictures all named dog.jpg
Image size is a default 600 pixels wide, so it is not necessary to upload larger images than that. If images are larger please be sure they are 'saved to web' from your image editor so that file sizes are as small as possible. With tens of thousands of images they start taking up a lot of space, even when individual file sizes are small.

Uploading

There are two methods for uploading images into the Wiki.

Method 1

On the lower left in the sidebar when you are logged in as an editor there is a link to the "Upload file" page.

Imgup7.jpg

Right click on the link and open the page in a new tab of your browser. This will allow you to go back and forth between the image upload and the edit window you are already on.

The Upload Files page looks like this:

Imgup8.jpg

1. Click the "Choose File" box. This will open a browse window where you will navigate to the location of your image

Imgup9.jpg

Click on the image you want and click the Open box in the browse window. You will then get a pre-upload page:

Imgup10.jpg

Note there is a box checked for "Watch this file". You probably want to uncheck the box so you don't end up with a huge number of items on your watch list.

2. When you are ready just press the "Upload file" box.

You will get a page that looks like this:

Imgup11.jpg

3. To add the image to the page you want it on, first highlight the part at the top of the file upload page that is the file page name.

Imgup12.jpg

Copy it (using Ctrl and c)

4. Go to the page you are editing and paste the file link in the text box.

Imgup13.jpg

5. Format the file link. Add two beginning brackets at the beginning and two at the end. If you think the image size is larger than 600 pixels then you can add a bar | and 600px between the file name and closing brackets.

Imgup14.jpg

6. Preview and/or Save the page by clicking the box at the bottom of the edit window.

Method 2

Also on the left sidebar there is a link called Upload multiple files.

When you click on it a page opens that allows you to select by browsing on your computer, or drag and drop to that page.

Imgup15.jpg

The page looks like this

Imgup16.jpg

1. For the Browse method click on the box that says Select files(or drop them here), then follow your computer directory to find the files you want to upload.

Imgup17.jpg

After you click Open it will upload automatically and will give an OK statement when done.

Imgup18.jpg

2. For drag and drop, find the files and highlight them, then drag and drop them on the page. It will start uploading automatically and will give an OK statement when done.

3. After doing either method you will need to go to the image pages for what you just uploaded to find the link necessary for adding to a page. You can find the most recently uploaded files by going to the Gallery of New Files

4. To add the image to the page you want it on, first highlight the part at the top of the file page that is the file page name.

Imgup12.jpg

Copy it (using Ctrl and c)

5. Go to the page you are editing and paste the file link in the text box.

Imgup13.jpg

6. Format the file link. Add two beginning brackets at the beginning and two at the end. If you think the image size is larger than 600 pixels then you can add a bar | and 600px between the file name and closing brackets.

Imgup14.jpg

7. Preview and/or Save the page by clicking the box at the bottom of the edit window.

Galleries

To make a gallery copy the code below, but replace the image and page links with what you want to link to. You can use the noimage.jpg file when there is an existing page but no image on that page yet.

<gallery mode="packed-hover">
File:S&Nkakapo.JPG |Science and Nature 75343 Kakapo
File:noimage.jpg|Science and Nature 75484 Echidna, Small
</gallery>

It looks like this:

If you choose to omit the Packed Hover style, for instance on an individual figure page, then use just the pure gallery tag.

<gallery> </gallery>

The above example, with the page link omitted, would then look like this:

Special Pages

Editors have access to some Special Pages through a link in the left sidebar. Sometimes the content of those pages needs to be refreshed manually. To do so click This Link.
