domain | Eukaryota | Volvox is a genus of freshwater green algae that forms spherical colonies of up to thousands of cells. There are two types of cells: flagellate somatic cells and fewer germ cells embedded in the surface of a hollow sphere. Eyespots located anteriorly on the cells enable the colony to swim toward light. Large, non-mobile gonidia in the interior produce new colonies asexually through rapid division. In sexual reproduction, male colonies release sperm packets, while in female colonies single cells enlarge to become eggs.
