domain | Eukaryota | Spirogyra, or water silk, is a genus of filamentous charophyte green algae, named for the helical or spiral arrangement of its chloroplasts. More than 400 species are found in freshwater worldwide. Length is up to several centimeters. Filamentous masses are carried to the surface by oxygen as slimy green mats. Reproduction is asexual by fragmentation or sexual by conjugation.
