domain | Eukaryota | Closterium is a single-cell freshwater charophyte green algae shaped like a crescent moon. There are 2 identical semi-cells separated by a median narrowing, but only one central nucleus. Each chloroplast has an axial series of pyrenoids. The cell is about 0.2 mm long, with rounded tips, each ending with a vacuole containing crystalline granules. Reproduction is by binary fission and also conjugation to form a hypnozygote. The charophycean algae group is the closest unicellular relative to land plants.
