domain | Eukaryota | Vorticella is a genus of bell-shaped ciliates that attach themselves to substrates with contractile stalks. Found mainly in fresh water, reproduction is by binary fission. Following a free-swimming stage, a stalk is formed, beginning a sessile stage of filter feeding. Oral cilia create vortices in water currents, while feeding on bacteria.
