phylum | Chordata | The marsupial lions were a family of predatory cat-like marsupials native to Australia. They had teeth modified for slicing, despite sharing ancestry with wombats. They first appear in the fossil record during the Oligocene Epoch and disappear during the Pleistocene, suggesting that they had contact with humans. A variety of species of different sizes apparently coexisted, which may mean that they preyed on different animals.
