kingdom | Plantae | Prickly pears belong to the genus Opuntia, in the cactus family, Cactaceae. Like all true cactus species, prickly pears are native to arid regions of the Americas, but they have been introduced to Australia and Africa. Prickly pears typically grow with flat, rounded pads called cladodes with two kinds of spines; large, smooth, fixed spines and small, hairlike prickles that easily penetrate skin and detach from the plant. Prickly pears produce a fruit, commonly eaten in Mexico and in the Mediterranean region, known as tuna. The fruit can be red, wine-red, green, or yellow-orange.
