Phoeniconotius

phylum | Chordata | Phoeniconotius is an extinct genus of flamingo known from the Neogene of Australia. It was larger than extant flamingos, up to 1.5 metres tall and more heavily built. It probably went extinct as Australia became more arid and the shallow lakes it lived on dried up. It is known only from isolated foot bones, but flamingo feet are highly distinctive and its identification as a flamingo is therefore uncontroversial.
