domain | Eukaryota | Paramecium caudatum is a unicellular protozoan in the phylum Cilophora characterized by hair-like cilia. The cigar-shaped cell is rounded at the anterior end, tapered at the posterior. Length can reach 0.25 mm. Food is swept along a long oral groove into the gullet, which forms food vacuoles. Two star-shaped contractile vacuoles regulate water. There are two kinds of nuclei: a micronucleus for reproduction and a macronucleus for general cell regulation. Reproduction is by fission and conjugation. The species is widespread in marine and freshwater environments.
