It is a common fantail found in Australia (except western desert areas), the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and New Caledonia. The species is considered by many to conspecific with (the same as) the New Zealand fantail (Rhipidura fuliginosa),however due to differences in its calls some authorities now treat it as a separate species
