domain Eukaryota Members of Equisetum, also called horsetails, are vascular plants that reproduce with spores rather than seeds. Equisetum is the only living genus of the family Equisetaceae. During the Carboniferous, the genus Calamites had trees reaching 30 meters tall. The leaves, arranged in whorls, are non-photosynthetic, unlike the green stems. Strobili are cone-like structures at the ends of stalks where spores are produced. Distribution is nearly cosmopolitan.
