The clade Enantiornithes was a diverse group of Mesozoic birds that first appeared in the early Cretaceous and went extinct along with non-avian dinosaurs at the end of the Cretaceous period. The clade name derives from the Greek enantios, meaning 'opposite,' and they are frequently referred to as 'opposite birds.' This name is a reference to the joint between the scapula (shoulder blade) and the coracoid; in enantiornithine birds, relative to modern birds, the convex and concave facets of the joint are reversed.
