phylum | Chordata | The blotchy swellshark, or Japanese swellshark, Cephaloscyllium umbratile, is a species of catshark found in depths of 90 - 200 m (300 - 660 ft) in the northwestern Pacific Ocean, from Japan to Taiwan. Length is 1.4 m (4.6 ft), with a broad head and 2 dorsal fins located past the pelvic fins. It can inflate its stomach with water or air to wedge inside a rocky crevice. The egg case, or mermaid's purse, is 12 cm (4.7 in) long with tendrils from the 4 corners. After a year in the capsule, the emerging shark is 16 -22 cm (6.3 - 8.7 in) long.
