It is widely distributed across Europe and Asia and is usually associated with animal dung, especially from cattle, which is its main food source and breeding site. Adults are small, typically 5–8 millimetres in length, with a black head and pronotum, and reddish-brown elytra. This species plays an important role in decomposing animal feces and recycling nutrients.
