Animal Icarops The text of the paper insert for this figure reads:

"Scientific Name: Icarops breviceps Pronounced: ic-a-rops brev-ee-seps
Type of Animal: Mammal Period: Early Miocene (23-20 million years ago)

The Burrowing Bat was a strange mammal that lived in the forests of Miocene Australia. Its only living relative is the endangered Short-tailed Bat of New Zealand, which chews into rotting trees to make long burrows. Unlike most bats, which hunt by catching insects in flight, the Burrowing Bat probably searched through leaf litter on the forest floor for beetles, crickets and other insects."
