Yowies Lost Kingdom 3 Ducabrook Rhizodont
Animal | unspecified, probably †Strepsodus | The text of the paper insert for this figure reads:
"Scientific Name: Rhizodontid family Pronounced: rye-zo-don-tid
The Ducabrook Rhizodont was a large predatory fish that lived in freshwater lagoons and river deltas. It preyed on other large fish and amphibians, stabbing them with its deadly front fangs. It would then use its powerful body to roll in the water with its prey, tearing off chunks of flesh, like crocodiles do today. Rhizodonts were lobe-finned fish, related to the modern Coelacanth of Africa and Asia." Various rhizodonts are known from the Carboniferous of Australia, and some have suggested that this figure is meant to represent Barameda. However, Barameda was found in a formation in New South Wales, whereas the Ducabrook Formation is in Queensland and has produced fossils of the related Strepsodus. It would also have been in the news but unnamed in 2000, when the first Australian Strepsodus fossils were described (though the genus was previously known from elsewhere). |
