The Yeti or Abominable Snowman is an ape-like cryptid taller than an average human that is said to inhabit the Himalayan region of Nepal and Tibet. The names Yeti and Meh-Teh are commonly used by the people indigenous to the region, and are part of their history and mythology. Stories of the Yeti first emerged as a facet of Western popular culture in the 19th century. Many scientists and historians brought explanations for the origins of the legend of Yeti. The most skeptical ones say that this legend only comes from the witnessing of brown bears standing upright, making them look like hairy humans. But a few others have a different opinion. As a matter of fact, those scientists think that the legend may originate by ancient sightings of Gigantopithecus, a prehistoric giant ape, who could have survived to a much later period than usually thought, after a migration to the north that became necessary for some reason (climate change or big competition for food or land)... In any case, the mystery hasn't been solved yet and the legend of the Yeti lives on.
