It is the most common turtle in its range in the southeastern United States from Florida to Virginia. Length is under 13 inches (33 cm), with females larger than males. The plastron is yellow with black spots along the edges. The skin is olive green with yellow stripes on the neck and legs. Popular as pets, it can interbreed with invasive red-eared sliders.
