phylum Chordata Temnodontosaurus was a genus of ichthyosaur of the Early Jurassic of what is now Europe. It reached a length of perhaps 9 meters and had the largest known eyes of any vertebrate, up to 20 cm in diameter. The large eyes were supported by a ring of internal bones known as a sclerotic ring. Like other ichthyosaurs, Temnodontosaurus likely gave birth to live young while at sea.
