phylum | Chordata | The Steller's sea cow is an extinct marine mammal and was the largest member of its order. It reached up to 9 metres in length and was first described by naturalist Georg Wilhelm Steller. The sea cow had been abundant throughout the North Pacific, but by 1741 its range had limited to a single, isolated population surrounding the Commander Islands. The sea cow was hunted to extinction within 27 years of discovery.
