The genus contains a single species, Stegouros elengassen, known from a semi-articulated, near-complete skeleton. Stegouros was estimated at to be about 1.8–2 metres (5.9–6.6 ft) long. The last twelve caudal vertebrae are covered by seven pairs of large osteoderms, the last five of which again are fused together to form a flat connected structure.
