phylum | Chordata | The splendid garden eel or orange-barred garden eel is a conger of the family Congridae, found in Indo-Pacific oceans at depths of between 18 and 75 m. Length is up to 40 cm, and the body diameter is up to about 10 mm. The species live in abundant colonies of up to a few thousand, on sandy burrows close to corals and reefs. Like other garden eels, they bury their body in sand and allow their head to stick out to grab passing food items. Splendid garden eels are known for their coloration with orange or yellow and white stripes.
