phylum | Chordata | The South Island Adzebill is one of two species of extinct adzebills formerly endemic to New Zealand. Their taxonomic affinity is uncertain, but they have been tentatively assigned to the Gruiformes based on morphology and limited genetic evidence. They were flightless and large, up to 18 kg and 80 cm in length. They became extinct subsequent to the colonization of New Zealand by Polynesians and their accompanying animals, especially dogs and rats.
