It can be distinguished from the American cockroach by a uniformly dark brown coloration, without the light-rimmed pattern on its thorax. The smokybrown cockroach is common in Japan and the southeastern United States. It requires moisture and tropical temperatures. It is a detritivore, feeding on a wide array of organic matter.
