phylum | Chordata | Sea pineapple, Halocynthia roretzi, is an edible ascidian or sea squirt, consumed in Korea as meongee, and in Japan, where it is known as hoya or maboya. It lives in shallow water, usually attached to rocks and artificial structures, an example of marine biofouling. While adapted to cold water, the optimum temperature is 12° C (54° F). World aquaculture production of sea pineapples in 2006 was estimated at 21,500 tons, worth around US $18 million.
