phylum | Chordata | Scolosaurus is an extinct genus of ankylosaurid dinosaurs within the subfamily Ankylosaurinae. It is known from the lower levels of the Late Cretaceous Dinosaur Park Formation (latest middle Campanian stage, about 76.5 Ma ago) of Alberta, Canada. It contains a single species, Scolosaurus cutleri.
For more information, visit the Wikipedia entry. Scolosaurus was depicted in mid-20th century art as a squat ankylosaur with a short, double-spined tail. This was due to misinterpretation of the fossil specimen, which had an incomplete tail. The animal in life would have more closely resembled Euoplocephalus. In fact, it was long considered a synonym of Euoplocephalus, and many pre-2010s Euoplocephalus reconstructions are actually hybrids of Eupolocephalus and Scolosaurus. Get back to Thyreophora |
