phylum | Mollusca | The red slug, Arion rufus, is a species of land slugs in the family Arionidae, the roundback slugs. While native to northwestern Europe, it has been widely introduced and is easily confused with other species, especially the black slug, A. ater. Color varies from orange or red to brown or black. The respiratory pore is toward the front of the mantle. It lacks a keel and the surface is wrinkled. The fringe of its foot is red-striped and its tentacles are dark. Length is 7 to 14 cm. It is commonly found in gardens, wooded areas, and dry coastal habitat.
