The Poitou donkey is originating in the Poitou region of France. It is one of the largest donkey breeds. The Poitou is known for its distinctive coat, called a cadanette, which if unkempt hangs in long, ungroomed cords. This trait is to a large extend inherited in crossbred animals.
A pure bred Pitou donkey has massive bone structure and large hooves. They have large, long heads, strong necks, long backs, short croups and round haunches.The ears are develop to such an extent that their weight sometimes causes them to be carried horizontally. The temperament of the Poitou has been described as "friendly, affectionate and docile".
