phylum | Chordata | Pikaia gracilens was a primitive chordate animal, that lacked a well defined head and was typically less than 2 inches (5 centimetres) in length, known from the Middle Cambrian Burgess Shale of British Columbia. Sixteen specimens are known from the Greater Phyllopod bed, where they comprised 0.03% of the community. It resembles the lancelet and perhaps swam much like an eel. Molecular studies favor the tunicate as the closest living relative of the vertebrates instead of the lancelet.
