phylum | Brachiopoda | Paraspirifer bownockeri (syn. Spirifer bownockeri) is a large brachiopod, up to 7.5 cm or 3.0 in., that lived during the middle Devonian. Distribution is known from Ohio and New York. Epibionts, commensal organisms that grew on its surface, suggest that it inhabited clay mudflats. Some of its fossils from the Silica Shale of Ohio are preserved in pyrite, gold in color.
