phylum | Chordata | The ornate or western box turtle, Terrapene ornata ornata, is native to the Great Plains of the United States. The ornate ranges from Nebraska to Texas, and is threatened or protected in several Midwestern states. The typical length is 5.9 inches or 15 cm. Coloration of the carapace is black with yellow rays, similar to the Florida box turtle, T. carolina bauri. The desert box turtle, T. ornata leuteola, is a different subspecies, indigenous to the Southwest and northern Mexico.
