phylum | Echinodermata | Asterias amurensis, the Northern Pacific seastar or Japanese common starfish, is a seastar native to the coasts of northern China, Korea, Russia, and Japan. The ballast water of ships probably introduced seastar larvae to ports in the Pacific as well as Europe and Maine. Physical removal before reproduction is the most effective control of this invasive species.
