phylum Annelida The nightcrawler belongs to genus Lumbricus, large, reddish earthworms distributed worldwide. The genus has nearly 700 species, with some of the most commonly seen earthworms in Europe. Common names are Regenwurm in Germany, common earthworm in Britain, and nightcrawler in the US. It lives in temporary burrows and comes to the surface to feed and breed, and also to migrate after rainfall. In addition to soil aeration, earthworms transport nutrients to the surface in their waste.
