phylum Mollusca Mikadotrochus hirasei is a species of large sea snail, a marine gastropod mollusc in the family Pleurotomariidae, commonly known as a slit shell. This species is endemic to the waters surrounding Japan and is found at bathyl depths (deep-sea environments). The shell is large, conical, and distinctively flared at the base. Its color is typically white or pale yellow, marked with prominent reddish-orange axial flames or zigzag patterns. A defining feature is the deep slit (or selenizone) that runs along the outer edge of the last whorl, from which the common name is derived.
