Mawsonites

superdomain | Ediacaran biota | Mawsonites is a Precambiran fossil that consists of a rounded diamond shape, made up of lobes radiating out from a central circle roughly 12 cm in diameter, with about 19 radiations. It was originally thought to be the medusa of a jellyfish, but other hypotheses are an algae holdfast, a filter feeder, a burrow, and a microbial colony. The suggestion of a mud volcano or another pseudofossil does not account for its complexity.
