phylum | Chordata | Mauisaurus is an extinct genus of elasmosaurid plesiosaur that lived during the Late Cretaceous period in what is now New Zealand. It is named for a figure from Maori mythology. Mauisaurus had the largest number of cervical vertebrae of any known plesiosaur, and was large, reaching 8 meters in length. One specimen was found in evident combat with a contemporary mosasaur.
