phylum | Arthropoda | Triops longicaudatus, common name longtail tadpole shrimp, is a freshwater crustacean of the order Notostraca, resembling a miniature horseshoe crab. A flattened carapace with 3 eyes covers two thirds of the thorax, and a segmented tail ends in two long filaments, for a total length of 75 mm (3.0 in). Like other branchiopods, it has gills on its legs. The morphology has changed little in the past 70 million years. Dried eggs of triops are sold in kits to be raised as aquarium pets.
