phylum | Chordata | The kipunji, Rungwecebus kipunji, also called the highland mangabey, lives in Tanzania. It is related to the grey-cheeked mangabey and the black crested mangabey, but even more closely related to baboons. Since its discovery in 2003 to 2004, it was placed in its own separate genus, the first new African monkey genus since 1923. The kipunji is classified as critically endangered.
