superdomain | Ediacaran biota | Kimberella is a genus of bilaterian from the Ediacaran period. The slug-like organism fed by scratching the microbial surface in a manner similar to molluscs, although its affinity with this group is contentious. It may have used a long neck like the arm of a digger to scratch food into its mouth. Kimberella has theoretical importance as a bilaterian for dating the divergence with cniderians, the protostome / deuterostome split, at over 580 million years ago.
