Hartland started in the 1930s producing steering wheels and other plastic items. By the 1950s they had moved into making plastic toys and introduced the first of a series of very popular horses. Over the years they produced other series in various sizes, some dogs, and some other farm animals. Animal production stopped in 1963 and since then the company and molds have changed owners a number of times. They produced out of an early plastic called tenite, with the Tiny Mites line names being a word play off of the plastic name.
