phylum | Arthropoda | Gigantocypris is a genus of ostracod crustacean in the family Cypridinidae. Its members are large, measuring up to 25 millimetres (1.0 in) in diameter. Color is orange, living at a depth of 900 - 1,300 m (3,000 - 4,300 feet), where there is no natural sunlight. A large pair of eyes use parabolic mirrors rather than lenses to focus light onto a retina. Vision may be used to find sources of bioluminescence to locate prey, such as copepods and small fish.
