Fungi, singular fungus, are a group of eukaryotic organisms that includes unicellular microorganisms such as yeasts and molds, as well as mushrooms, the mulicellular fungi that produce familiar fruiting forms. Members of the Fungi kingdom have cell walls that contain chitin, different from plants, animals, and some protists. Fungi are heterotrophs, acquiring food by absorbing dissolved molecules after secreting digestive enzymes into the environment. Abundant worldwide, they are the principal decomposers in ecological systems
