It is mostly found on the hulls of ships and inanimate objects, but also attaches to fish, whales, turtles, sea snakes, crabs and seaweed. Distribution in worldwide. The name goose barnacle derived from a belief that barnacle geese originated from the crustacean before it was known that they migrated.
