phylum | Chordata | The Chinese alligator, also known as the Yangtze alligator or historically called the muddy dragon, is a critically endangered crocodilian endemic to China. Dark gray or black in color with a fully armored body, the Chinese alligator is less than half the size of its American relative. It brumates in self-constructed burrows in the winter and becomes nocturnal in the summer.
