It is a close relative of the grove snail (Cepaea nemoralis). This species is native to Western and Central Europe and has been introduced to parts of North America. Like its relative, the shell of Cepaea hortensis is highly polymorphic, but is typically yellow, pink, or pale brown, often marked with dark spiral bands.
