phylum | Chordata | The cardinal tetra is a small tetra native to the Orinoco and Negro river basins in South America. It grows to a length of approximately 2.5 cm and bears an iridescent streak of blue along the midline, produced by guanine crystals in the skin. The brilliant red beneath this streak, however, is pigment-based. This species is common in the aquarium trade.
