phylum | Chordata | Bothriolepis ("pitted scale" or "trench scale") was the most successful genus of antiarch placoderms, if not the most successful genus of any placoderm, with over 100 species spread across Middle to Late Devonian strata across every continent. Most species of Bothriolepis were relatively small, benthic, freshwater detritivores, averaging around 30 centimetres (12 in) in length.
