phylum | Cnidaria | Chrysaora achlyos is a species of jellyfish in the family Pelagiidae. This species is known as the Black Sea Nettle, or Black Jellyfish. Chrysaora achlyos is a gigantic species: it can grow up to a bell diameter of 1 meter, with tentacles up to 5 or 6 m long. It is dark purple in color and it is found in the Pacific Ocean. Extraordinarily, this huge species was discovered very recently, in 1989; it earned its latin name in 1997. This jellyfish, like other jellyfishes, feeds on smaller jellyfishes and other zooplankton.
