| Bigfoot, also known as Sasquatch, is the name given to a cryptid ape- or hominid-like creature that some people believe inhabits forests, mainly in the Pacific Northwest region of North America. Bigfoot is usually described as a large, hairy, bipedal humanoid. The term sasquatch is an anglicized derivative of the Halkomelem word sásq'ets. Most scientists discount the existence of Bigfoot and consider it to be a combination of folklore, misidentification, and hoax, rather than a living animal, because of the lack of physical evidence and the large numbers of creatures that would be necessary to maintain a breeding population. However, a few scientists and historians have a rather different opinion about it. As a matter of fact, those scientists think the legend of the Sasquatch may have begun with ancient sightings of Gigantopithecus, a prehistoric giant ape who could have survived to a period much closer to us than usually thought. While the climate was changing, those scientists believe, a few surviving gigantopithecus individuals may have migrated to the north and even crossed the Bering strait to West Canada. Those giant apes have been seen by the ancestors of the Amerindians and the Bigfoot legend begun. In any case, the mystery hasn't been solved for sure and the legend of the Bigfoot still lives on.
